Just the Facts - Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and occurs when your body either resists the effects of insulin or does not produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level. Over time, high blood sugar can cause damage in many parts of the body, including the blood vessels. In fact, two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke. Yet, there are often simple lifestyle changes you can make to significantly reduce your chances of heart-related issues caused by diabetes.
Screening
If you are experiencing symptoms of diabetes or have a history of diabetes in your family, call your doctor to schedule an appointment. Screenings usually consist of a series of questions before any testing is done. The fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test is the preferred method of diagnosing diabetes because it is easy to administer, convenient and less expensive than other tests. Based on the results of the FPG test, you may need further testing.
