2009 Event Recap
The 29th Annual Dick Batchelor Run for the Children presented by Universal Orlando Foundation was a huge success! The event took place at Lake Eola Park in Downtown Orlando on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Nearly 2,000 runners participated in the 5K race in support of The Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families, part of Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. With budget cuts on the rise and children's services in high demand, the Dick Batchelor Run helps raise money for those who need it most through the child abuse prevention and treatment offered at the center.
Runners and spectators enjoyed a fun morning that included a variety of activities, including food provided by Rainforest Café, Panera Bread and Collins Catering.
Dairy Farmer's, Inc. hosted this year's Kids' Fun Run. Children also had the opportunity to participate in a number of free activities, including coloring stations, pumpkin decorating, and mask creation.
One of the most memorable moments during the race was cheering on the Orange County Xtreme Team as these local firefighters completed the 5K course in full fire protection gear. The team's mission is to support, promote and educate our community on health and wellness issues. After the race, they provided free health assessments as well as kids' activities, including a fire truck-shaped bounce house.

During the Awards Ceremony, presented by 5 Hour Energy, prizes were awarded to the following runners:
- Japheth Koech & Heather Schulz won Overall Male and Female and took home one pair (2 tickets) of Universal Orlando 2-Park Power Passes, Verizon Wireless Duffle Bag and phone, and a pair of New Balance Shoes.
- Angelo Cusimano & Beth Jeck won Overall Male and Female Masters and took home a certificate for a pair of New Balance Shoes, and 12 months of thrills at Universal Studios Florida/Islands of Adventure.
- Josh Wolfe & Bea Marie Altieri received 12 months of thrills at Universal Studios Florida/Islands of Adventure as Male and Female Second Place Overall Finishers.
- Jose Henriquez & Kelly Arribas were also awarded 12 months of thrills at Universal Studios Florida/Islands of Adventure as Male and Female Third Place Overall.
Dick Batchelor, as well as the entire Howard Phillips Center team, would also like to thank the following sponsors for their commitment to this year's run: Hospitality Sponsor - Starwood Vacation Resorts, Winners' Prize Sponsor, IKON Office Solutions, T-Shirt Sponsor - CHEP, Kids' Activity Sponsor - CED Construction, Advocacy Sponsor - Solantic and their first aid services, and Opening Ceremony Sponsor - Cadillac, who provided the pace car during the race. Many thanks to our media partners, WESH TV 2, MIX 105.1 FM and Orlando Magazine for their support.
The Howard Phillips Center is widely-recognized as one of the leaders in the country for its cutting-edge advocacy and outreach programs. One of its model programs is the Orange County Children's Advocacy Center (CAC), a treatment center for abused children where healing begins for kids as young as three years old. The CAC,
and other similar programs at The Howard Phillips Center, rely heavily on support from the community, as well as events like the Dick Batchelor Run for the Children, which is the largest fundraiser for the programs at the center.
